Home EV Charger Installation in South Wales: Grants, Smart Chargers & What to Know

10 March 2026 8 min read South Wales All Articles

Electric vehicle ownership across South Wales has grown dramatically, with the Cardiff Capital Region, Swansea Bay, Newport and the Vale of Glamorgan among the fastest-growing EV markets in Wales. If you've recently made the switch or are planning to, getting a dedicated home EV charger installed is one of the best decisions you can make — not just for convenience, but for cost, battery health, and safety.

Why Not Just Use a Standard 3-Pin Plug?

The 3-pin plug (Mode 1 charging) delivers only 2.3kW — meaning a typical family EV takes 24–40 hours to fully charge from flat. More importantly, 3-pin charging puts sustained load on a domestic socket that isn't designed for continuous overnight use. It increases the risk of overheating the socket, the plug, and the extension lead if used. Most vehicle manufacturers now recommend against this as a primary charging method.

A dedicated 7kW home wall charger (Mode 3) charges the same car in 6–10 hours, uses a purpose-built circuit, and includes smart features like scheduled charging and app connectivity.

The EV Chargepoint Grant — Are You Eligible?

The UK Government's Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) provides a grant of up to £350 toward the cost of a home chargepoint installation. As of 2026, eligibility requirements include:

  • You must own, lease, or have ordered a qualifying plug-in vehicle
  • You must live in a flat, rented accommodation, or social housing (for homeowners in houses, the EVHS ended in April 2022 — but the grant remains for other dwelling types)
  • The chargepoint must be installed by an OZEV-registered installer

Megalec are OZEV-registered. We handle all grant paperwork on your behalf and apply the discount directly to your invoice.

Smart Chargers vs Standard Chargers

Since June 2022, all new home EV chargepoints installed in the UK must be "smart" chargers — meaning they connect to your home WiFi and can be scheduled, monitored, and controlled via an app. This is now a legal requirement, not an optional upgrade.

Smart charging allows you to:

  • Schedule charging during off-peak electricity tariffs (typically overnight)
  • Monitor charging sessions and track energy usage
  • Integrate with solar PV if you have it
  • Pause or stop charging remotely
  • Benefit from time-of-use tariffs (e.g., Octopus Intelligent) which can reduce charging costs to 7–8p/kWh

What Does EV Charger Installation Involve?

Our EV charger installation service across South Wales covers the full process from survey to commissioning. A typical installation involves:

1

Pre-installation survey: We assess your driveway or parking situation, the location of your consumer unit, and the best route for the new dedicated circuit.

2

Dedicated circuit: A new cable is run from your consumer unit to the chargepoint location. We use a dedicated MCB — the charger does not share a circuit with any other load.

3

Trunking or surface-mounted installation: Cables are neatly trunked or surface-run to a professional standard.

4

Charger commissioning: The unit is mounted, connected, and commissioned via the app with your preferences configured.

5

Certification: An Electrical Installation Certificate and Building Regulations notification are issued.

Does My Consumer Unit Need Upgrading First?

In some properties — particularly those with older 60A or 80A fuse boards — we may recommend a consumer unit upgrade before installing a 7kW charger. This ensures sufficient capacity is available and that the new charger circuit has proper RCD protection. We'll advise on this during your survey.
