Under the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671:2018), surge protection must be provided where the consequence of an overvoltage could result in serious injury, damage to irreplaceable items, or disruption to important equipment. In practice, this means most new installations and consumer unit upgrades require an SPD.

SPD installation typically costs £150‑£300 including the device and fitting. This is a small investment compared to the cost of replacing damaged electronics. The exact price depends on the type of SPD required and your consumer unit.

Type 1 SPDs protect against direct lightning strikes (required where lightning protection is fitted). Type 2 SPDs protect against indirect surges and grid switching (most common for domestic installations). Type 3 SPDs provide additional protection at individual socket outlets for sensitive equipment.

In most cases, yes. If your consumer unit has a spare way, an SPD can be fitted. If not, we may need to add a small enclosure next to the consumer unit. We'll assess your setup and advise on the best solution.

SPDs have a finite lifespan as they absorb surges over time. Most quality SPDs have indicator lights showing their status. They typically last many years under normal conditions but should be checked during periodic inspections and replaced when the indicator shows end‑of‑life.
